It is Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis -- a protozoal infection that horses can acquire from exposure to possum feces -- generally just from grazing in pastures where possum have had access. Most horses simply develop antibodies to the infection but for unknown reasons, some horses don't (or do but inadequately) and the protozoa migrate to the cells of the Central Nervous System where they destroy the host cells while they build colonies of protozoa, commonly referred to as *lesions*. This process does enormous neurological damage to the horse, usually resulting in total loss of use of the horse and/or death. The research and vet communities don't understand the disease and can't cure it, although they'll be happy to sell you one or all of several drugs which run anywhere from $200.00 to $2,000.00 per month and only interrupt the disease -- most horses relapse within 30 days of stopping the drugs. So that's the wonderful world of EPM. MA -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver.
