It is made from cow hooves. Many are avoiding gelatin because we do not know all the ways prions can be transmitted. High heat does not kill them.
My brother was working in Europe a couple years ago and he said during the BSE scare people stopped eating all gelatin containing products, including Altoid breath mints. Methionine is the main amino acid in gelatin that is beneficial to nail growth. Biotin will also help. One could take these two amino acids and avoid the gelatin altogether.
