Final Update:

Thanks to all who responded with very helpful suggestions. I called
WestPointStevens and enquired about the effect bleach would have on
  these blankets.

Much to my surprise, I immediately received two return phone calls.
One was from Diane Raychard in the Quality Control Department in
Biddeford, Maine. Diane was extremely helpful, and explained the
blanket has a core made of polyethelyne foam. Nylon fibres are
bonded to the foam to give it the insulating qualities.

Unfortunately, bleach destroys polyethelyne foam. She recommended
using lysol to disinfect the blankets, but if you are sensitive to
chemicals, this may not be a good idea.

Regretfully, I took the blankets back to WalMart for a refund. There
was absolutely no problem once I explained the situation. The
blankets will be sent to a Woman's shelter and hopefully be put to
  good use.

I must commend WestPointStevens on their very quick and helpful
response. If you decide to buy Vellux blankets, please be assured
these are extremely good blankets and should give you years of
pleasure. They are used in hotels, which is where I first discovered
  them.

I found some sites on the web where people discovered the blankets
may disintegrate. Diane explained that washing them every six months
helps restore moisture to the foam core, and they should give many
  years of useful service.

Best Wishes,

Mike Monett
