I think most doctors probably require a positive blood test before
proceeding to the biopsy. But as you say, I doubt the blood test really
catches everyone. So a lot of people who should have a biopsy probably
don't get one. However, a biopsy has risks.
The person I knew who died, had been mis-diagnosed for at least 10-15
years before finding out she was celiac. Once she was diagnosed she was
very strict on the celiac diet, but it was not enough. BTW, a real
celiac diet is godawful, involves FAR more than just avoiding gluten in
grains and grain products and baked goods.
