During calendar 1990 we had a principal investigator conduct a detailed project designed to evaluate various protocols for ameliorating hip dysplasia in dogs. A majority of the experimental population was composed of Dobermans and German Shepards (Primarily because of the very high incidence of deterioration of the hip joints in these breeds). Many different protocols involving diet, mineral supplements, physical therapy, patented drugs and alternative medical approaches were evaluated. Almost all evinced some degree of improvement.....but only one yielded almost universal, high-degree, rapid positive resolution......with no side effects. The protocol involved the simple addition of alfalfa in the form of tablets or powdered granules.....to the diet. For rapid improvement the required volume was about one heaping teaspoon of powdered alfalfa or 12 standard 50 mg tablets, per day for a 30 to 60 pound dog (about 6 tablets or 3/4 teaspoon for smaller dogs, down t! o 10 lbs weight). I was so impressed with his results, that in 1993, when our 10 year old Sheppard mix came down with SEVERE hip dysplasia....after receiving the vets pronouncement that NOTHING could really help (Teddy was in constant pain induced upon rising or walking and he required 300 mg of Butazolidin (enough to pain-sedate a 1500 lb horse)
just to bear the pain enough to rise and relieve himself.....and his cries of pain in doing so were more than my wife could bear) As a last resort, my wife began administering alfalfa
as a supplement to his food.....within 5 days he could stand without pain; within 14 days he was able to run, pain free, and go up stairs without discomfort. We considered this, essentially, a miracle. Teddy lived an additional pain-free 5 years, succumbing to age-related complications in late 1998.
During the ensuing years we have informed dozens of friends, acquaintances, and veternarians of this protocol......with almost UNIVERSAL beneficial results. Some individuals informed that somewhat larger dosages were required for larger dogs ( 50 and over pounds).
MSM, Glucosamine Sulphate and Chrondroitin were not widely known supplements at the time our research was being conducted......but I am informed that Alfalfa meal, or tablets, still get results in cases not totally responsive to these later protocols.
Our researcher confessed he received his original inspiration from a woman who had written to Prevention Magazine back in the 1970s....revealing her wonderful results in saving her beloved German Sheppard suffering hip dysplasia, with alfalfa meal supplement.
I hope this information may prove of value to some on the list. I made a post covering the general parameters of this research some five or six years ago.....but since the Archives are no longer available I ask the indulgence of those of you who are, already,
aware of this protocol.
Sincerely, Brooks Bradley.
p.s. Whenever we forgot, or ran out of alfalfa for a period of 5 to 7 days running, Teddy's
symptoms began to reappear......he received alfalfa supplementally the rest of his life.
