Way back when the mortality rate was very very high, defectives would be
killed...immediately...and old folks voluntarily dropped out to starve so
the clan didn't have to drag them around and itself out of the business of
staying alive.

So, genetic up-breeding plants and animals is dangerous and down-breeding
humans isn't.
