I may be missing something but surely that boils down to user settings too. Assuming a fixed width for the timeline element (N pixels wide) then you need to figure out how to scale the desired content to fit in that many pixels. What the API doesn't give you is a method to give you "date X through date Y in the current viewport". You've got to do the maths for that yourself then feed the appropriate mid-date and scale so the start/end date fit in the current timeline viewport.
