An 'open relay' is an SMTP server that allows 'third-party message relays.'
That is to say a message that is sent by a non-local user (e.g. a spammer)
to a non-local recipient (e.g. some poor schmuck in the spammer's address
database).

In SIMS' SMTP settings, make sure that 'Relay for clients only' is enabled
(checked) and enter the IP address(es) of computers for which you are
willing to relay (your LAN, etc.) in the Client Hosts lists. Your SIMS will
now only relay messages sent from Client Hosts addresses and you are
effectively closed to third-party relays.
You should also be running one of the 1.8 beta releases, if you're not
already. Even though it's technically a 'beta' version, 1.8b8 has been out
for a very long time and is extremely stable. There's also a
1.8b9d[something] on Stalker's FTP server (ftp.stalker.com) that a lot of
us are using without problems.

My SIMS box stays up for months on end, but it's only running SIMS and
AutoShare. It's a 6150/66 running OS 8.6.

Hey, no need to be defensive. 8^) We all started there at one time or
another (well, maybe not Bill Cole -- I suspect that he was decanted as a
fully-developed network engineer -- but he's the exception that proves the
rule... ;-] )
