LOL. Here is an example of quick paradigm shifts in action :) Actually, I'm surprised that mailing lists have survived as long as they have. To be fair, though, my inspiration comes from a niche social news sites called Hacker News[1]. I use Digg when explaining the concept because it's recognized by more people. But there are differences from Digg, other than the narrower scope. For example, there is the Discussion feature, where you can submit a question (forum style) and have the community reply to it and vote on it just like news items. It might seem like a small difference, but in my experience, I've noticed that it creates an interesting mix between news and forums.
