I request to be admitted to the proposed list for purely journalistic and cultural observation reasons.
My background in AI is limited to some expert systems work in the late 80's and also three years of work with a linguistic start-up working on the problem of natural language "Machine Translation", as it was then termed, which work featured a rule-based semantic/syntactic language parsing engine. I also have a decently informed background in cognitive psychology. To come clean, I do not believe AGI can work, and more importantly I do not believe anyone has convincingly shown why it would be in any way desirable. (I am however interested in following up with R. Loosemore's recently initiated directions, sufficiently enough to obtain a working understanding about why they are unique (or not)). I am nowadays a retired software consultant, mostly, and am mostly spending my time and energy with music, writing, small farming, and family life. I think that for anyone to be considered a respectable or serious AGI researcher, especially within the context of SIAI's stated "friendly" impulses, that researcher would have to have a personally thought out coherent position on the sociological and cultural implications of and reasons for/goals of AGI, something beyond just the wishful longing for and unexamined faith in increased global "intelligence" either partially or entirely disassociated from direct human agency. Such a respectable or serious person would therefore recognize the potentially very large social responsibility associated with their work (even in the face of opinions such as mine that their aims are not possible) and would naturally wish not to restrict interested outside parties from their general discussions and research directions. Most especially when such discussions directly contend with "friendliness". I would likely not post to the list, just observe the available spectrum of opinion and cultural perceptiveness, as well as the contending notions of what "friendliness" means and how it would be assayed and obtained. I would make this pledge: no future potential writings about this subject on my part to the general public would occur without first maknig them available here for comment. Up to you. ~R.S. -------------- Original message from "Rolf Nelson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: -------------- > Announcement: "fai-logistics" is a new archived discussion group to > discuss the most effective ways of aiding the development of Friendly > AI.
