You should use CANCEL unless you want to terminate just a specific early
dialog without affecting other branches (if the INVITE forked). CANCEL will
terminate all dialogs & branches (assuming none have generated a final
response).

That is not correct. A BYE will not change the INVITE processing. When you
receive a final response to the INVITE, you still must send the ACK. If the
dialog you send a BYE on is the only branch (i.e. no forking), you'll
probably cause the UAS to send a 487 response (like it would if the INVITE
was terminated with CANCEL). Either way you still have to send the ACK.
