Hi Santosh,
..To add to what has been already written.... Ask yourself why are HTTP
( WWW ) and SMTP ( email )so popular?
Well the same answers will answer your question as to why is SIP so
popular and is the future of VoIP.
Here are the key points - SIP can exist anywhere along with IP and ( UDP/
TCP ). TCP/IP and UDP are is the protocols that drive internet
everywhere in the world. Hence SIP can exist anywhere in the world. All u
need is internet. Its cheap compared to H.323 because it does not require
special hardware, it can be easily implemented and maintained in pure
software. SIP is just another "application level" protocol which is
end-to-end and hence scalable.

Hi Santosh,
SIP has been designed in conformance with the Internet model. It is an
end-to-end oriented signalling protocol which means, that all the logic is
stored in end devices (except routing of SIP messages). State is also
stored in end-devices only, there is no single point of failure and
networks designed this way scale well.
It is worth of mentioning that the end-to-end concept of SIP is a
significant divergence from regular PSTN (Public Switched Telephone
Network) where all the state and logic is stored in the network and end
devices (telephones) are very primitive. Aim of SIP is to provide the same
functionality that the traditional PSTNs have, but the end-to-end design
makes SIP networks much more powerful and open to the implementation of new
services that can be hardly implemented in the traditional PSTNs.

hello all
very good morning.
i am a beginner as as for as SIP is concerned.i have some basic query in
mind.
i have searched internet but i couldn't get any convincing explanation.
well.. here is my question.
we have different protocols like ..voip meant for internet
telephony,H.323 for video conferencing ,wap meant for wireless
applications.
Then what lead to the evolution of SIP.
why its so popular and so widely accepted.
i am preparing a presentation on sip,if somebody asks me why we need SIP?
when
we have so many protocols doing their job prefectly, where does sip fits
in
and can we say that these prtocols will vanish after SIP comes into
existence.
please clarify my doubts.
thanks for you time
