santhosh,
Your best answer would probably be : "nobody truely knows"
If people keep pushing for a more elaborate answer, stay with the facts. You
can say things like:
- SIP has broad support across industry (both "telecom" and "Internet"
worlds ), standardization bodies, etc
- it is being actively developed, large number of RFCs, drafts, etc
- there are things you can do with SIP that you could also do with other
protocols (both standard and proprietary)
- there are things that you cannot do with SIP
- some of the things you can do with SIP match some things that people say
they want to have
- concerns like interoperability, future direction, customer desires, etc
may all be reasons for using SIP
Truth is, there are many factors working together to make SIP "so popular
and so widely accepted". Not only technical, also socio-economic reasons,
timing of the availability of the standard, political reasons, etc.
Discussions about technical reasons (and comparison with alternatives) can
go on and on, just don't go there
"Why we need SIP?" is a valid question but cannot be answered without a
context. It depends on what you want to achieve

hello all
very good morning.
i am a beginner as as for as SIP is concerned.i have some basic query in
mind.
i have searched internet but i couldn't get any convincing explanation.
well.. here is my question.
we have different protocols like ..voip meant for internet
telephony,H.323 for video conferencing ,wap meant for wireless
applications.
Then what lead to the evolution of SIP.
why its so popular and so widely accepted.
i am preparing a presentation on sip,if somebody asks me why we need SIP?
when
we have so many protocols doing their job prefectly, where does sip fits
in
and can we say that these prtocols will vanish after SIP comes into
existence.
please clarify my doubts.
thanks for you time
