It is not strange at all; it is what one would expect -- A replaces
himself with C, and B replaces himself with D, thus resulting in C
talking to D.

And this is not peculiar in the real world. Suppose A calls B, and B
says "Please wait, I want to go to another phone, I will transfer the
call to phone D." And then A says "Yes, I would like to move myself to
phone C. I will transfer my end of the call to C. We will talk when we
are both at the new phones."
