   as newcomer to SIP, i am puzzled by the expected UA behaviour in the
   case of a REFERence to a destination that immediately diverts the INVITE
   request.

   e.g.:

   X                  Y                   Z

   REFER  ------------>
   <------ 202 Accepted
                       INVITE ------------>
                       <---- 302 Moved temp

                ?? <--  --> ??

   how does Y proceed in the REFERence?

If Y considers the 302 a final response to the INVITE (does not
recurse on it), then it considers that the INVITE has failed with a
302 respose, and reports that to X in a NOTIFY. If Y recurses on the
302, it sends further INVITE(s), which are processed as you'd expect.
