For best results consult following draft:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sip-outbound-08.txt
However, I am not sure how many devices already
implemented it.

I saw 2 different implementations which seem to work
well in a real world:
1. Server shortens registration expiration to around 1
minute. Clients frequently register with the server.
2. Use OPTIONS method. Since text parsing is rather
expensive, it is easier to create a SIP request. Every
once in a while server sends out an OPTIONS request.
Processing a response should be much faster than
processing a REGISTER request.
