I think thats because with a mailing list you have to see all the activity.

With a forum,  people tend to hunt and peck for what they want without having 
to read through post that don't relate to them.

BTW, there is one very important aspect about a mailing list that isn't such a 
given in forums. 
There is a connection between members which seems to happen now and then which 
I don't see as often in forums.

Maybe that's part of what the old school feeling is with lists.
