I think this is pretty easy to understand. If you turn on federation and
have the proper firewall rules to allow it, the user can set their
"alternate" IM address in the portal (john...@gmail.com or whatever) and
have the "mybuddy" alerts sent to their google account via instant messages
(you received a fax, 1234567 called and didn't leave a voicemail). Another
example would be: using pidgin/polycom on the desktop logged into the sipx
im account via pidgin and adding other users (gtalk, etc.)  see your phone
status. Use cases are different, varied, and everyone has their own
preferences. I gave an example on the WIKI in 2010...
