        I had the problem again today. I should have gotten a screen shot 
(especially because the problem manifests itself slightly differently on 
my setup, but is clearly the same problem).

        However, I was able to fix it in a different way. I went into my 
Displays Preferences in the "Alignment" tab. Tweaking the alignment just 
a tad (so that OS X was forced to redraw the screens) fixed the problem 
(not permanently, of course).
