Excellent, Jim.

This is what I was broadly suggesting when I said to "enlarge the document".
I do this same thing, usually not in Preview/Skim (which don't have great
cropping features).

In my case, I am always making the documents smaller, so that I can print
them as PDF booklets, which require only 1/4 as much paper to print.  I make
5.5 x 8.5 booklets of most longer papers. (A common smaller paper size.)

Your provided steps are much better than my vague "enlarge it".

That should help the OP greatly.
