And with the old style black images the opposite happens on Leopard,  
where it was hard to distinguish black on a dark background. Moreover  
the buttons were inconsistent. I think it's much more important to  
improve 10.5 support than to be held back too much by supporting  
Tiger, especially as this change does not break anything. More and  
more users will also move from 10.4 to 10.5, not the other way around.

The whole problem is that Tiger does not allow us to change the style  
of those buttons, that's only supported on Leopard.

That's intentional. The old preference weren't valid anymore, as the  
set of available buttons has changed. This is also an important reason  
why it's almost impossible to keep support for the old-style toolbar  
buttons on Tiger, because it's not just a replacement of images.
