Thanks Christiaan

(btw, sorry for posting with an outdated title)

This is interesting. It is true that I notice this happens much more
with my dvi latex-generated output than with my pdf latex-generated
output. (Maybe it doesn't happen at all with my pdf latex-generated
output, but I'm not sure. I feel like it happened but I switch so much
between them that I may be confused.)

Puzzlingly, >File> Revert does go from gray to black, so somehow Skim
knows a file has changed. Why doesn't it auto update then?

In any case, as a workaround, and useful in its own right, it would be
great if to have a keyboard shortcut for a user initiated update. Such
a feature is common in dvi viewers (although I don't know any good
such dvi viewer for the mac). Then, say I recompile my .dvi and Skim
did not, for some reason, auto update. I could then press a key
combination and update the file (similar to the current >File>Revert
but: a. I need to use the mouse for that. b. I need to confirm that I
want to revert, by hitting OK or enter; and c. next time I update
the .dvi I get asked again about whether I want to allow autoupdate,
that is, Skim forgets my previous answer). I think a high percentage
of Latex users of Skim could benefit from this.

Thanks
