Honestly, why should the current behaviour be dangerous? The currently selected mode is highlighted in the toolbar, using the wrong mode can not produce anything that is not reversible and will usually just cause something not to work (as in your example) - all of which is nothing exceptional. Also, introducing double-clicking into a toolbar seems to be a highly non-standard behaviour in Mac OS X .
