[reviving an old thread]An Apple discussion thread at http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=10439162 offers a solution to a problem mentioned previously here re garbled greek symbols, equations, etc. in PDFs:
Try deleting both preference files associated with both Preview and Adobe Reader.
~/Library/Preferences. com.apple.preview.plist com.adobe.Reader.plist <--- wording might be slightly different. Move those files to the Trash and restart your Mac.That seems to have solved the problem confronting me in the moment -- which was that equations displayed properly in Acrobat but not in Skim; Safari and Preview displayed properly when the file was first opened but not thereafter. None of the apps displayed the "ff" in "different". After the above, all problems fixed in all apps.
