Thanks -- had missed that; will try the next time such a problem arises.
My guess is that you have a problem with your font cache (happens
more often, especially on 10.5.x it seems). The Wiki has some hints
on how to reset the caches.

Try deleting both preference files associated with both Preview and
Adobe Reader.
~/Library/Preferences.
com.apple.preview.plist

Move those files to the Trash and restart your Mac.
That seems to have solved the problem confronting me in the moment
-- which was that equations displayed properly in Acrobat but not
in Skim; Safari and Preview displayed properly when the file was
first opened but not thereafter. None of the apps displayed the
"ff" in "different". After the above, all problems fixed in all
apps.
