You don't need to check this button. You just need to change the font color 
from the font panel, don't show the colors panel using Shift-Cmd-C. I.e., click 
the "Text:" font control (it becomes highlighted and the Font panel shows) and 
in the font panel hit the Text Color button (a T with a color swatch, just 
above the font lists). THEN change the color.
