as far as I can recall it: it started with SKIM 1.3.7
But it could be that with installation 1.3.7 someting else changed in
my environment which causes the gray pages.
And:
yesterday I had the gray page with 1.3.8. It seems to persist with
other pdf-files.
But later on _ or when I have worked with Adobe in the meantime – SKIM
works with these very files correctly.

Have you tried resetting the fonts cache? Type "atsutil
databases -removeUser" in Terminal.app, hit Enter, and relogin.
