What OS version do you have, and what version of tar (in particular 
/usr/bin/tar) do you have? Could you have installed a different version over 
the Mac-provided one? Because the default one should preserve the annotations. 
Though it may be that it has problems with large amount of notes, so do you 
also have this when there are only a few annotations?
