Weird. But I cannot do anything about this. The selection is done by Apple's 
PDFKit code, including drawing it. So any bugs in that are Apple's and outside 
our control. Skim only comes in (for this action) after the selection is made, 
to add the highlight, and the result shows that the selection was correctly set.

BTW, you seem to make things more confusing than they probably are, by talking 
about the highlight tool mode. You should get the same selection problem in 
text mode, which is a lot cleaner. Or you could compare the behavior in 
Preview, my guess is that you;d get the same problem. That always is a clear 
sign that it's Apple's problem.
