If someone can address D. Stall's questions, it would also be good to get 
advice about maintaining Spotlight indexing. I have never been able to clearly 
understand which edits of a pdf are picked up by Spotlight and which are not. I 
think that flattened pdfs are searchable, but after experimenting with Acrobat 
and PDFPen (two other pdf editing programs for Macintosh), I found that edits 
that looked the same to me were differently indexed (PDFPen's edits were 
indexed, and Acrobat's were not).
