This has been discussed on this list. The font rendering in Skim and Preview is
exactly the same, as both are done entirely by the system's PDFKit. Any
differences are therefore entirely due to (slight) differences in view settings
(including the amount of background for the pages.) The fact that PDFKit's font
rendering is so sensitive to those settings should be considered a bug in
Yosemite's PDFKit. Whether that is evolving is a question to be asked at Apple,
because we are not involved.
