Hi Tom, I've tried out Goodreader (it's on a time-limited offer for USD 0.99 at the moment - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goodreader/id777310222 ) and it does indeed work with the highlights and have Dropbox-sync, so it serves as a nice plan B for me right now.
iAnnotate is though the app that people recommend at our institution, so I'm going to put a bit of effort into finding a workable solution with that.
