Right.  We had discussions about this some years ago and the authors
of Skim did not want to do anything about it.

However, it is an extremely useful feature.  When Skim crashes it sets
up a report page.  Rather than going through all that, I have
discovered that one can just hit 'esc' and the page will go away. 
Then on the next refresh it's fine again.

If there were a technical way to know when the file is done and to
prevent Skim from ever crashing this way, that would be very useful.

This is the only way I use Skim.  It makes Skim extremely valuable to
me because other PDF viewers do not update and so are useless.

So I'm not going to stop using it this way just because you discourage
it.  People can appreciate skim for different reasons.

It would be nice if there were a technical fix so it did not crash. 
Then Skim would be perfect from my viewpoint.
