I just noticed that on some PDFs, search can be used to temporarily highlight 
matches pretty much like I want. Ditto with Preview (though Skim is nicer). 

The problem only seems to be with the batch of PDFs I was focused on this 
morning. (They are all from one major science journal publisher).

So, I guess this isn’t really a Skim issue. My apologies. Thanks for the prompt
