Jack, it means you have 12 unread messages, missed calls, voice mails or contact requests. Go to the conversation list with control 2 and use the arrow keys to find your new messages. Depending if you are in compact view or default view, there's a different way to read them. In compact view which is the most recommended mode, you must press the context key on each message and click on send I m.
