Johannes, Earlier this week I checked and saw that my 170622 version was shown as the current one. Now I see there's a 171108. I'll upgrade all packages tomorrow morning.

No. I had version 3.01 installed in texmf/. That directory has been removed. I downloaded 3.44; the differences between it and 3.43 are probably minor.
If you update texlive, it will be overridden again. If you really want a special beamer version, put it in TEXMFHOME kpsewhich -var-value TEXMFHOME
I assume that REXMFHOME is a directory in ~/ that's exported from ~/.bash_profile.
