She writes with an appropriate amount of humor, given all the easy targets Microsoft has set up. I've had an incredible time, and this has easily been the best technical/Linux show I've been to since [1]ALS was still operating. I've got a write-up below, and some notes on what happened, what's the plan for next year (It'll be in Adelaide, and I'm greatly looking forward to it!), and a photo round up. A number of other [2]articles have appeared, and Kate MacKenzie's [3]write up in The Australian was good as well, in addition to Telsa Gwynne's [4]excellent write-up and [5]Linux Magazine Au has some articles as well. Update: 02/04 02:42 GMT by [6]T: ilovestuff points out [7]ZDNet Australia's coverage as well. Dillon was one of the developers 'responsible for making FreeBSD 4.x the most rugged and stress-proof free operating system in existence,' and also contributed to fixing the Linux VM. Unfortunately, there has been [1]little explanation from the FreeBSD core team about why Dillon was thrown out, leading to [2]speculation and [3]worries about the future of the FreeBSD kernel. Does the Slashdot community have any more insight into this situation? Would someone from the FreeBSD team care to elaborate and assuage our worries?" According to their site: 'MAS integrates with a compatible X11 server on your desktop. It processes graphic information locally, alleviating the need for network transmission of uncompressed graphical content. Graphic events are easily synchronized with audio events for professional-quality multimedia and accessibility-enabled applications.'" The X.org site describes MAS as an "[2]affiliated technology" rather than "official," but it is released under the same [3]license. "MAS" stands for "Media Application Server," and it's developed by [4]Shiman Associates. So everybody who has a CGI-directory on a web-server, also has its own shell on it -- comparable with Telnet or SSH. That's really practical, because most webhosters don't offer a shell (for free) -- but do offer CGI. With [1]CGI-Shell you can execute commands, copy files or just explore your webserver. Even a history and auto-completion with tabulator are included. From the article: 'The segment, which also includes Microsoft's TV platform and PC games, posted a quarterly operating loss of US$348 million, compared with $180 million in the same period a year ago.'" An anonymous reader points to [2]similar coverage at news.com, pointing out that the company also reports "profits for Office, and one small note about an undisclosed presumably Japanese company that Microsoft if propping up. So, the big question on my mind is, who is Microsoft secretly holding above water, and why? The fact that they are presumably Japanese, seems to point towards an XBox partner. Could this explain the sudden flood of Sega exclusive games?" Another anonymous reader writes "Microsoft [3]will be showing a smaller sized Xbox at E3 this May. In addition to the smaller size of the hardware, the Xbox Lite will also be integrated with Media2Go allowing Xbox users to download digital content such as music and movies. Wonder what this means for all the current Xbox Mod Chips?" The [2]Free *nix desktop has been improving quickly. [3]Red Hat's unified desktop was controversial, but obviously the right decision for regular users. Now that KDE and Gnome have decided to [4]combine their Human Interface Guides, it can be done right--by the developers themselves. Note: they also want to involve 'people working on other non-KDE non-GNOME HIGs.'"
