Mitsubishi Robot - Watchdog, Nurse, Annoying Friend
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/04/2214232

[0]jomaree writes "The SMH Online [1]reports that Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries have developed a robot (to run on Linux) with voice and face
recognition capabilities. The robot would be able to connect to the
Internet, contact you by e-mail or a mobile phone and, say, send you a
message if it 'hears' a strange noise inside your home. It can also
remember the side effects of medication. Reportedly, Mitsubishi claim
that the robot 'will become a future house-sitter, caretaker, nurse and
friend for the family'. Unfortunately the robot can also be programmed
to ask 'You're home late. What have you been up to?' Don't we already
have people for that?" The Japanese newspaper [2]Mainichi Shimbun has a
    story with pictures.

Listen To Your Game Boy Advance
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/05/028251

[0]filmsmith writes "It looks like Nintendo may be interested in using
the GBA to enter the PDA market and even considering itself competition
for the [1] Apple iPod. It smells of DMCA pandering, though. 'It looks
like protection will be in place to ensure that even content recorded
by users (through the use of a special adapter) will not be able to be
shared with other users.' [2]Planet Gamecube has the article here."

Where Should Space Exploration Go From Here?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/05/0333200

[0]Lovejoy asks: "I have done extensive reading since the [1]Columbia
tragedy about what's next for human space exploration. Most of the
punditry agrees that extending the shuttle program for many more years
is a [2]bad idea. So what are the practical alternatives? I've seen
ideas for [3]new spacecraft, a carbon nanotube [4]space elevator, among
other things. What are the best ideas you've seen? Will the best idea
win, or the one with the most pork barrel contracts? Does space
travel/exploration have to be THIS expensive? What are the best short
    term/long term solutions?"

CPU Convective Water Cooling
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/04/2137214

[0]biso writes "The possibility of cooling a CPU with gravitational
convective flow of water is [1] here analyzed and experimented with
positive results. Many liquid cooling systems have been experimented by
overclockers to better dissipate the heat from CPUs. The major part of
these coolers is characterized by a relatively complex system requiring
pumps or other active devices. Sometimes even liquid nitrogen is used.
I built a simpler cooler, able to dissipate the same heat flux of a
    normal heatsink."

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/05/013249

An anonymous reader writes "[0]GreyMagic has issued five new security
    advisories for the recently-released [1]Opera 7.0. They affect [2]the
security model, [3]the javascript console, [4]images, [5]the history
and [6]the error log (allowing access to the history). A new version
will be released within 24 hours to fix the holes, according to an
    [7]article at [8]The Register." Update: 02/05 02:01 GMT by [9]T: An
anonymous reader writes "[1]Opera Software have just released Opera
7.01 for Windows. This version fixes [10]the recently discovered
security holes less than 24 hours after they were discovered - a very
impressive turnaround! The release is currently only available on
[11]Opera's FTP site. It can be downloaded [12]with Java (12.9Mb) or
    [13]without (3.3Mb)."

Red Hat Certification Program For Education
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/04/1959232

[0]Frank Caviggia writes "The Inquirer has a story up about Red Hat
providing educational institutions with the ability to certify students
as Red Hat Certified Technicians (RHCT) and Red Hat Certified Engineers
(RCHE) how this will relate to Microsoft's MSCE program. You can find
the story [1]here. Red Hat has more information on the program

5th Anniversary of Open Source
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/04/1918243

[0]Augustus De Morgan writes "Five years ago today a [1]brainstorming
session in Palo Alto led to the adoption and promotion of the "[2]open
source" label. (You can find references to the label [3]much earlier,
however.) For some, it was a [4]dark divergence from the free software
movement; for others, the beginning of the adoption of key software
principles into mainstream. Here's a [5]growing set of resources and
stories about the history of free and open source software, and a
[6]lament about the decline of altruism in the open source community."
