RIM Loses NTP Case, To Pay $53 Million
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/05/2313215

[0]theodp writes "A judge has ruled in favor of holding company NTP in
its patent-infringement case against BlackBerry maker Research In
Motion, [1]awarding monetary damages and fees of $53.7 million and
granting an injunction preventing RIM from making, using, or offering
to sell handhelds, services or software in the U.S. until the date of
expiration of NTP's patents, the latest of which is May 20, 2012. The
court then stayed that injunction, pending an appeal by the Canadian

    [0]Halo videogame fan-videos and [1]machinima, Cobaltnova.com has
launched the first ever [2]Rockets on Prisoner awards: 'Cobaltnova is

before a [4]certified public accountant will announce the winners.
Those expected to do well include Randy Glass, maker of the famous

incredibly funny and fresh videos, and, of course, the well known fan
favorites [7]Red vs Blue. Most of the videos can be found for judging
by flipping through [8]the six nomination categories, or numerous

Meet Martin Taylor Of Microsoft's Open Source Test Lab
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/05/228219

[0]securitas writes "[1]Martin Taylor was [2]recently appointed as
Microsoft's open source and Linux strategist and is responsible for
[3]Microsoft's open source and Linux test lab, mentioned on Slashdot
last week. Taylor says his goal is to [4]change Microsoft's competitive
strategy by pursuing a fact-based approach instead of continuing the
previous discredit-and-undermine strategy that was characterized by
calling open source and Linux software 'a cancer, un-American and
bankrupt' among other things. Taylor says he plans to focus on (and
fund) studies that 'will highlight Microsoft's advantages in areas such
as security, feature-completeness and total cost of ownership.'"

Who Owns Source Code When a Company Folds?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/05/1920207

[0]pipeb0mb asks: "A few years ago, I worked for Chilliware, Inc. as
the 'Technical Development Manager'. Some of you may remember us for
the software iceSculptor, Mohawk and Mentor. Chilliware folded rather
quickly and harshly back in May of 2001 due to money issues. Within
days of the first layoff, everyone was gone, from the CEO and VP's to
the receptionist. Now, years later, I've been digging through some old
CDs, and am reminded that I still have the final production source code
for the products we released in the retail channel. I've attempted to
contact several folks over the past couple of years to gather
information about the software and who owns it now. To no avail though.
Either I get an 'I don't know' or 'No one' from the dis-interested
parties. I feel like these programs are my children that never got a
fair shot. I hate to see so much work wasted and lost to the ages. So,
Slashdot: What do I do with this source code? It's a great deal of well
commented and well written code, performed by over 100 developers in a
former Soviet Republic (who formerly worked with Boomerang Software).
Where do my binary children go now?" As things are now, if a company
folds, the code is buried and forgotten unless someone buys the rights
to it, before the source code is lost. This issue was discussed [1]a
long time ago and there didn't seem to be much in the way of answers.
Have 3 years made any difference?

Linking Dangerously
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/05/1639226

[0]indole writes "Some /.'ers might remember [1]the story [2]of Sherman
Austin, a Californina native who created the "anarchy" website
[3]raisethefist.com. Besides posting links to bomb-making instructions,
the site caught the ire of the FBI for advocating the overthrow of the
U.S. government. Well, approximately 18 months later Sherman Austin,
now age 20, [4]has been sentenced to 1 year in federal prison.
According to Austin, 'he took a plea bargain because he feared his case
was eligible for a terrorism enhancement, which could have added 20
    years to his sentence.' Doubleplusungood."

encouraging the unemployed to take up freelance technical support,
including advice on knowing if this work is right for you, marketing
yourself, learning on the job, handling and educating clients, managing
the business, the temperament required, and the negative aspects of the
