http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/234234

slumos writes "BBC News Online is reporting on [0]Sir Clive Sinclair's
reaction to the Segway. The [1]British inventor thinks it's fine for
factories, but not for crowded streets, and he's even planning some
competition in the form of a top-secret follow-up to the [2]Sinclair
    C5."

[0]Karl Cocknozzle writes "CNET News is reporting that [1]Novell may
discontinue NetWare following the purchase of Linux software company
[2]Ximian - for details on the purchase, see the [3]recent Slashdot
article. Novell plans to run its NetWare services - such as eDirectory
and Secure Identity Management - on the Red Hat and SuSE Linux
    distributions."

Former Intel Engineer Pleads Guilty To Taliban Aid
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/2252246

[0]theodp writes "Following up on an [1]earlier Slashdot story,
software engineer Maher "Mike" Hawash [2]pleaded guilty Wednesday to
conspiring to provide services to the Taliban, agreeing to testify
against other suspects in exchange for the dropping of other terrorism
charges. He will serve at least seven years in federal prison under the
deal. In March, federal agents seized Hawash from a parking lot outside
Intel Corp., where he worked, and held him as a material witness until
charges were filed five weeks later."

[0]Rob Lanphier writes "RealNetworks made two announcements at
LinuxWorld this week: we will be [1]giving out up to $75,000 by the end
of the year for development of open source projects based on the
[2]Helix multimedia platform. Also, we just formally launched the
[3]Helix Player project, which is a project to build a GTK+ based user
interface for Linux, Solaris, and other UNIXy operating systems. Press

SCO Targets US Government, TiVo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/2232223

An anonymous reader writes "According to SCO, if you have a TiVo
set-top box, or those models of Sharp Zaurus which use Linux, someone
now [0]owes them $32, since the company wants money 'for each embedded
system using Linux.' SCO also says government agencies [1]must pay up
to $699 for each copy of Linux that they use."

Community Involvement for an Open Source Project?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/2043214

pfleming asks: "Several months ago I began a maintenance fork of some
niche software. Essentially, these are PHP/MySQL scripts for real
estate offices. The original developer moved on to an incompatible
version to what I was using. Upgrading for me and many other users was
not the easiest option. Luckily the software is GPL'd and so continued
work on the fork is not a big deal. I have set up a site, made it
available for download, announced the availability of the fork on
[0]Freshmeat and the forums for the original software. Now I have a few
people subscribed to the project on Freshmeat, and a few on a mailman
list set up for the project. This project has been listed on the [1]GNU
Website and other mirror sites but doesn't get much discussion on the
mailman list and nothing from the Freshmeat subscribers. There is
usually an increase in interest (indicated by a short term increase in
site hits) when new releases are announced but this fades back to
regular traffic of ~40 visits per day as measured by webalizer after a
short period of time. Is this an anomaly? Should I be thankful that
there aren't tons of bug reports and feature requests?"

11-Pound Model Plane Vs. The Atlantic, Again
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/1913242

Luap Nanreffeh writes "Last year, ([0]/. Story 1, [1]/. story 2)
Maynard Hill and some retired NASA buddies tried to set a record for
[2]flying a model aeroplane across the atlantic ocean (from
[3]Newfoundland to Ireland). Their plan, using GPS, onboard
controllers, and a gallon of gas, would have been the first to cross
the Atlantic under FAI rules. They didn't have much luck last year, but
now they're at it again. The first launch should be tonight."

The Economics Of Spamming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/1831256

Shardleton writes "What kind of an idiot would buy penis-enlargement
pills? Even more idiotic, who would buy them from a spammer? Apparently
LOTS of people, according to [0]this article at Wired. The operators of
a spamvertised order site left their customer logs exposed. There were
6,000 orders for the pills since July 4. Sayeth Wired: "Do the math and
you begin to understand why spammers are willing to put up with the
wrath of spam recipients, Internet service providers and federal
    regulators.""

AMD Buys Pre-VIA Cyrix Media-GX Division
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/1543209

An anonymous reader writes "A long time ago, in what feels like a
different universe, Cyrix created the first sub-$1000 PC based on a 2
chip solution called the Media-GX. Soon after National Semiconductor
bought Cyrix, keeping the Media-GX team and selling the 686MX team to
VIA. In the meantime, the Media-GX team have created the a [0]series of
single chip PCs, and a totally new CPU, the GX2. Now National
Semiconductor is [1] selling the division to AMD, which should give it
a higher profile and better fab technology again." Reader [2]jlouderb
reminds us of National Semiconductor's [3]Device Girls promotion, "a
lame take-off on the Spice Girls," and points to [4]coverage at eWeek
    of the purchase.

Apple Public Source License Now FSF Approved
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/06/1729213

[0]BWJones writes "[1]Apple has now made their [2]public source license
2.0 free. From the release "The Darwin team at Apple is pleased to
announce that version 2.0 of the Apple Public Source License has been
[3]certified as a 'Free Software License.' APSL 2.0 includes numerous
changes and simplifications to make it even easier to use Apple Open
Source software as part of your programs. To indicate acceptance of
APSL 2.0, you can now use your new or existing "Apple ID", rather than
having a separate Darwin account."" [4]proclus adds "This is great news
for Darwin-based free software projects like [4]The GNU-Darwin
Distribution and [5]Fink. GNU-Darwin has had an [6]ongoing discussion
about this development, and annouced and end to our '[7]Free Darwin
Campaign,' so long as Apple avoids DMCA-based legal action."
