Here's my argument for not even having a UI control point for lipsync: I think a lot of times, the interface reflects the chaos of unanticipated evolutions/emergences of 'features'/'requirements' and I think this leads to very unfriendly UIs. When we look at a UI, the primary function of a UI should suggest 'function'. At best, it should not reveal the messy history of technical solutions (big fan of bauhaus, when u see something, its form should at best suggest function). So I think when we want to simplify a UI, may be we should ask: Is this check box here because some people dont really need it, or whether it is there... because we missed to implement that (whatever it is) in the first place and people built things around this situation and now will be unhappy once this feature is in by default. In passing, not entirely different problem: the skin issue not facing SL ... there is an understandable uproar against improvements regarding skin (beacause all skin businesses will be hit) that LL developers are trying to introduce. Of course, if it ultimately turns out that lipsynch has a footprint that slows everything down...then we should keep it in advanced where it belongs (and this does not seem to be the case).
In other words, I think the lipsync issue is a fragment of an ill-fragmented problem (this fragmentation reflects the 'chaos' of implementation processes or lack of staff or interest to implement it in the first place). So the question whether to have lipsync or not is a non-question from a strictly UI perspective. When one looks back, it makes little sense, as Ron and others pointed out, to represent an avatar producing voice sounds with no lips moving: 'ventriloquist effect'. I think folks who need lipsync off can perhaps go in the debug settings and set it off from there...I would not favor a check box solution which would already overload not only the UI, or put additonal unnecessary load on user manuals, orientation processes etc. Regarding, civility on the list, I apologize to anyone that I may have offended. Gordon, I truly did not want to be condescending. I truly believe we are all one and it's only our egoes/bundles of conditioning that separate us (and these are illusions). I was also wondering if it is appropriate to voice on this list things we would like to see, even if we may not have the time or resources to implement and demonstrate them. I certainly dont want to turn the list into wish list ( I guess it is a judgement call for me to make, but if you have ideas to help me, let me know). I feel that in the past, I had submitted ideas on different LL venues... but they did not seem to fit in those (e.g. UI suggestions: video bubbles, navigation aids, capturing/sharing of avatar spatial cognitive maps) R On Fri, May 1, 2009 at 12:09 PM, Giulio Prisco <g...@metafuturing.com> wrote: > I am generally in favor of lipsync as something that gives a more real > look&feel to SL.
