It would also be great to see any numbers on 32- vs 64-bit
performance, for any of you producing 32- and 64-bit stand-alone
viewers. 64-bit would make setup easier. It would be helpful to know
of any other gains.

32bit systems are limited to 4GB of main memory, but many motherboards
limit that further to only 2-3GB .

This is wrong. 32bits systems can use up to 64GB of RAM, with 2.6 Linux
kernels... It's just a matter of compiling the kernel with the right
option:

Processor type and feature
 --> High memory support
  --> 64GB (HIGHMEM64G)

When someone buys a Compaq Presario Home PC, you can expect the common person who buys such a pre-built system won't beĀ  one to uninstall Windows and install a custom Linux Kernel. Such 32-bit pre-built systems were being sold even after 64bit systems arrived, and the 32-bit system were limited to only 2GB!

What I said is not wrong, especially if you consider what is supported in common systems that people buy. A bit of common sense, please, and you'll see when I said limited that I meant by practical limitations and not what you thought as technically possible.
