Many of us already do 64 bit linux builds and the viewer code itself builds no problem and runs just fine on 64bit. What needs doing is all the supporting libraries all need building for 64bit, this process was started some time ago and some of the libs (at least for linux anyway) are built for 64bit. Its just the process was never finished. This is more a time consuming process rather than a technical challenge.
