don't you read sloan net posts? :)

seriously, if you've ever read one of the kids from ottawa's reviews of any
subpop show in that city, you'll know *exactly* what they mean. jeremy
explained it in explicit terms. the thing i don't get, is if the kids
who go to these shows get treated so badly and the venue generally sucks,
*why* do the bands return to those spots when duh, there are other places
in town? for example...

while most genuine music fans in calgary would rather frequent
the night gallery, really big out of town acts (bands on matador, merge,
and subpop, for example) usually end up at *shudder* the republik.
this sucks because then you get lineups like spent opening for sandbox and the
gandharvas and then seam finally coming on. victor, the guy who runs the
place, doesn't exactly know what's cool (two years ago he asked one of my
friends if he should book "some band called pavement" - he didn't think
anyone would come). you also get situations where drunken trendoids from
electric avenue come barhopping and stop off at the republik cause
"alternative is cool, dude." they usually show up with boxer shorts over
their pants and proceed to spill beer all over those of us who actually
want to see the bands. many a show ruined by these idiots.

eric's trip *always* play the republik. jale, hardship post, six finger
satellite, pond...all at the republik. the only subpop band i can
remember not being there was nirvana at the westward.

i don't know how bands/labels determine where they will play on a tour
(on the fire engine red tour, it was whoever would promise they might get
paid :) if anyone showed up), but i really like what colin and the bands
on murder have been doing lately and *asking* people for venue suggestions
and taking them to heart. surely with the budget of subpop as well as
access to the internet and c/c radio station music directors, you (not
you specifically, joyce, just whomever does these things) can spend
some time figuring out which venues will be favourable for both the fans
and the band. :)
