You're well out of date w.r.t. BigPond Advance/Cable (speaking as a happy
customer).
You now get a proper IP address in the 24.192 range through DHCP
The proxy/port filtering has gone - do anything you like
The split regions are only an issue if you try to talk to someone in the
same region, but that all goes away in the new year and you will be able
to talk with someone on the same segment.
*nix login clients work well, but are not "supported".
The charging regime is another issue entirely, but the market will push
that down as ADSL rolls out.
However, the "No servers" policy of Optus@Home would allow them to
legitimately block SYN packets in the name of security. And then their
cable system becomes useless (IMHO) - you can't even SSH into your home
system, let alone run a web server, etc.
