I've been running a web site for over two years over a
permanent 33.5k connection to telstra on various linux boxes.
I get about about 8000 hits a day (pages, that is) and mostly
it isnt too slow, but very light on graphics etc. Average page
size about 20-40K. I find that once a page has been up for a
short while, it gets cached around the place so that the 33.6
ceases to be a problem. Incidentally, this connection is very
reliable. The line drops about once a month, and I have a
reconnection script that cycles every 5 minutes, so the
average down time is about 2 minutes a month.
RH/Apache works straight out of the box. I presume other
distro's do too. Just have to sort out domains and IP numbers,
etc.
This connection is also used for all my kids and my wife to
surf and to dial in from work as needed.
Is there an alternative to Melbourne IT for .com.au domains? I
thought they had the monopoly. They certainly don't take
all that long. I think that problem is reserved for .org.au
I think it's probably cheaper to use another host, but it's
not as much fun, and you don't have as much control. You can
do all your own mail, ftp, anything else when you are bored.
