Depends on your definition of "easier". Backup Exec and ArcServe
definitely run on the Novell server, and work reasonable well - my
preference is for BE, because Arcserve's support sucks.
However, it's extra software, yes.

Nope. That only works if the Netware partition/volume is in the _same_ box
as your Linux machine. Netware doesn't "export" volumes, as such, except
via NFS.

Basically, a properly setup DS will never _need_ restoring, because you'll
have read/write replicas of all your important DS stuff scattered around
the place, and a disaster wouldn't take out your master as well as your
replicas unless it was a huge drop out.
For examples, my current NDS tree has replicas of the root partition in
Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Replicas of the other major partitions are
scattered around sydney offices. It'd need a bomb to blow up 3 offices in
Sydney, two in Melbourne and one in Brisbane before we lost the NDS
irrecoverably.
