Strata vs. Torrens title.
If you own a unit, you don't own the walls, only the airspace within
the walls. The body corporate owns the walls. Therefore you can't
give Optus permission to drill a hole in the wall for their cable to go
through, only the body corporate can. The body corporate is probably
next to impossible to deal with, and very slow to respond to requests.
Once you include lawer and letter writing time, plus the months of delay
getting approval to drill the hole in the wall, units would be monstrously
more expensive to install cable in. Strata title is AWFUL, I'm very glad
to have sold my unit and bought an old townhouse.
"But I can get Foxtel!"
Yup, because the building was wired with coax when it was built. This is
very common with recent unit blocks. Guess who negotiated the rights
to use this cable, with the developer (not body corp.) when the building
was constructed? Telstra, not Optus. Don't ask why but more than
90% of developments with built in cable are connected to Foxtel, not
Optus, and Optus will not be allowed to connect to that cable. It could
easily be 100%, I don't beleive that Optus ever persued unit connections
for its cable TV.
The last problem is that Optus have suspended their cable rollout.
If you can't get Optus cable now, don't expect it any time soon,
if ever.
