well, if your connection to telstra is a linux box for instance and it
has a modem connected to telstra and a network card connected to your
lan then...
the modem has the wan ip address attached to it.
the network card has one of the lan ip's attached to it.
this is just one example.
there are lots of other ways.
remember,
if your modem is being used as a ip port then
if "your box" has a modem only then one ip address.
if it has a modem and a lan card then two ip addresses.
if it has a modem and two lan cards then three ip addresses, etc.
ie. one for each network device.
