Mac's in general don't run SMB. Use netatalk on the linux box, TCP/IP on
the Macs.

That'd be versions 95 and newer - I don't think "greater" is the correct
word, except maybe in its "bigger" sense. And in any case, you need to
include Windows for Workgroups.

Samba won't give you a mounted filesystem view of files on wintel boxes.
Samba only has smbclient, which is an ftp type program for accessing files
exported from wintel boxes. You need smbmount to have a file system view -
but it's not quite as robust and well supported as samba is.
If you have a look at http://www.e-smith.net/ you can find a linux
distribution that's specialised to be an easy to set up and run workgroup
server for wintel and Mac boxes. You'll find an Australian mirror at
http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/e-smith/.
